The Department of Theater and Dance

The Department of Theater and Dance comprises Theater Studies and the Dance Program. The two disciplines were joined in the fall of 2009, but operate autonomously. Each program offers its own BA.

Founded in 1982, Theater Studies and Theater Emory are separate entities that make up a collaborative whole: our faculty are resident artists at Theater Emory, a professional company that is the program's producing organization. As working artists and dedicated teachers, faculty members pursue theater both as the foundation of a liberal arts education and as a means for serious inquiry. Our program approaches theater as another way of knowing, a discipline that investigates the human condition from the inside. The mission of the Dance Program, founded in 1987, is to provide a curriculum that interweaves both the practical and theoretical to foster students' creative, intellectual, and communicative powers in the field of dance.

The program develops skilled and uniquely expressive individuals who move and act with intelligence and sensitivity, think independently, and value original thought and diversity.
